Despite A Frustrating P4 Finish In Mexico City GP, Russell Praises Mercedes’ Performance

On Sunday, George Russell finished fourth in the Mexico City Grand Prix. Although he was unhappy to end up outside the top three, he was quick to compliment the development that his team has made, as they turned in one of their most convincing performances this year.

Both Russell and his teammate Lewis Hamilton started on the medium tyre, whilst Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez were on the soft tyre for Red Bull. Unfortunately for Russell, he was passed by Hamilton and Perez during the early exchanges, which caused him to fall to fourth place on the first lap.

Once that, the two Mercedes cars moved to the harder tires, while the two Red Bull cars went to the medium tires, with the intention of gaining track position after their competitors made their second pit stop. But Verstappen and Perez kept the mediums alive until the very end, forcing Russell to settle for a “frustrating” fourth place finish.

After the race, Russell was asked about his experience, and he responded by saying, “Yeah, it was a little bit disheartening to miss out on the podium.” I got off to a nice start, but Lewis was already there on the inside, and I think I may have been a little bit too cautious there with my teammate. In the end, that most likely cost me two positions today, since I would have finished first instead of second, and possibly the outcome of the race would have been different.

“But despite that, I couldn’t be more pleased with how far we’ve come as a team.” The performance that we are bringing week in and week out is incredibly outstanding, especially when compared to Ferrari, and it is especially impressive when compared to Ferrari.”

He added: “Credit must be given to Red Bull for maintaining their position as the industry leader. Again, this is a positive that can be taken away from the situation. Perhaps if we had been following the same plan as they were, we would have been much closer to them today.

During the opening stint of the race, Russell could be heard pleading with his team over the radio to allow him to spend more time on the medium tires so that he could finish the race on the faster soft tires. But after the race, he confessed that it might not have been the best idea, saying that he believed Red Bull’s soft-medium strategy was the preferable option instead.

“In retrospect, beginning with the easier levels and working up to the middle ones was the best course of action. Because my medium was already somewhat damaged from the early couple of laps, starting on the medium and going to the softs was a bit more challenging.

“We need to understand why Ferrari and Red Bull elected to start on the softs when we didn’t think that was the appropriate thing to do,” Jenson Button said after the race. As I was saying earlier, I can’t express how happy I am with how far we’ve come.
