Latifi says IndyCar is the obvious choice, but no deal yet

Nicholas Latifi has not yet decided what he will do after he finishes his career in Formula 1, but he believes that IndyCar is the natural progression for his career and that he would want to compete in all of the races if he went in that path.

After three trying years with a team that was never competitive, the Williams driver has decided to retire from Formula One at the end of this season. Latifi has scored nine points so far, seven of which came in the previous season, and two of which have come thus far this year.

However, he will be replaced by Logan Sargeant in 2023, and he will not continue to compete in Formula One. The Canadian driver acknowledges that IndyCar is the most promising category to shoot for, but he insists that he does not yet have any concrete plans in place to pursue it. Despite the fact that he does not see himself as a reserve driver for the long term, he does admit that IndyCar is the most promising category to pursue.

Latifi stated in an interview with the Formula One podcast titled “Beyond the Grid” that he was “keeping all the alternatives” and was “considering all the choices in that sense.” “It’s quite evident that making the jump to IndyCar is the most obvious way, or at least what seems like the most obvious route to the majority of fans and people looking in from the outside. It is still formula cars, the racing is at an exceptionally high level, and the series is a highly entertaining one.

“I can confidently state that, outside of Formula One, it is the series that I enjoy watching the most. In fact, when I have a weekend off from F1, I like to watch the IndyCar races.” It is apparent that the racing is really intense and close; it is spec racing like a more advanced version of the Formula 2 championship. But in addition to that, there are also other possible routes.

“I have not committed to anything at this time. If I’m going off of a couple stories from about a week or so ago, I should already be committed and signed a deal by now, and that’s exactly what I’m doing; but, that is not the case!

“It was actually quite funny in Austin, so many people who are fans said, ‘Congratulations on the IndyCar deal!’ and it was all just in walking and passing (by), so at some stage I’m not going to say ‘Oh it’s not true’ to everybody because I can’t really be bothered, it was coming up so much! “It was coming up so much! I haven’t made up my mind about anything just yet because there are so many different alternatives.”

Assuming Latifi were to make the move to the NTT IndyCar Series, the 27-year-old driver has stated that he would like to compete on oval tracks so that he could remain competitive throughout the entire season and give himself the greatest possible opportunity to win.

“If you’re going to be a formula car driver in Europe, you’re going to get the impression that racing formula cars on ovals is risky, and you’re going to get the impression that it’s riskier than racing formula cars on street tracks or road tracks, for example. If I were to run ovals, I would be conscious that it is certainly more dangerous to do so — there have been some extremely high-profile incidents, but in recent years, the vehicles have taken enormous steps in safety as they usually do, similar to how Formula One does things.

“If I were to do IndyCar, I would want to do the ovals because I wouldn’t want to take myself out of the running for potential championship points. If I didn’t do ovals the first year, then the second year I would be doing them would require me to learn and become on top of it. This is especially true if I were to do it for numerous years in a row. When you’re in a better position to battle for podiums, victories, and championships, you’re still at a disadvantage for a good number of races, it’s arguable.

“At one time, I did believe that they are extremely hazardous and risky, but I have since changed my mind. In more recent years, less so, but it’s still something I’d be interested in doing in the future. I believe there are only four races presently that are held on ovals, but if I had the opportunity, I would participate in every event.
