Despite the fact that the Thai driver finished in 12th place, Alex Albon believes that Williams can take a lot of positives from their performance in Austin.
Albon made this statement while his teammate Nicholas Latifi talked through a “tricky” afternoon that resulted in Latifi finishing in 17th place.
Albon started the race in the eighth position, but due to his sluggish start, he fell all the way down to the twelfth position by the time his first stint was over. After that, Albon made the changeover to another set of the medium tyres before a Safety Car let him to make a cheap pit stop for the hard tyre. The Safety Car was brought out when Valtteri Bottas spun out on the gravel, which caused the Safety Car.
Albon made good progress in his last stint, making his way up to ninth place, but he was unable to hang on to finish in the points, losing out to Sebastian Vettel and Yuki Tsunoda among others, as he slumped to P12 position as a result. Because of this, he was unable to replicate his performance from the Belgian Grand Prix, in which he finished in tenth place and earned the final point.
“I was looking for something along the lines of a Spa 2.0. It appeared to be going in that direction. When Albon was asked if Williams had done everything well in order to get points on Sunday, he responded by saying, “We did.” Today, and really the whole weekend, holds a lot of potential for us to learn and grow from, I believe. First of all, we were quite close to qualifying for Q3 on a circuit that doesn’t really work well for us and the conditions as well. Although the race was a completely different tale, I believe that we have reason to be happy of how we performed today.

Latifi, another member of the team, got off to a good start in the race, moving up to 15th place from 17th until spinning off the course at turn 6. Even though he was able to continue, he spent the majority of the afternoon suffering with tyre deterioration and running near the back of the field. He was allowed to continue.
When asked if the car was difficult to drive during the race, Latifi responded, “Yes and no.” “If I’m being completely honest, it was even better than I had hoped it would be. That’s not to suggest that the road wasn’t challenging to drive on. I believe that it failed due to driver error because of the high speed and the way that the vehicle reacted at that point. There was a lot of tension in the car there.
“Obviously, I didn’t really do any high-fuel race running, so it was kind of just investigating as we were going along,” he said. “It was an interesting experience.” In the end, fighting cars who were considerably quicker behind and attempting to hold them off was obviously bad to my race but beneficial to assist out the team. Lost it there and then obviously kind of got back in the race with the Safety Car. Therefore, after that, all I did was fight with the tires.”
When asked about his thoughts on the event, Latifi responded, “I think it’s justified, I don’t have any concerns with that.” The Canadian driver was also given a five-second penalty for forcing Mick Schumacher off the track.
